EN-072 ENGLISH ESSENTIALS

This course is designed to bring students to college level competency in grammar, sentence structure, coherence, and clarity. This begins with the preparation of a well-composed, coherent
paragraph and moves on to the process of writing focused
essays of at least five paragraphs in a variety of rhetorical
modes. Standard written English, including appropriate
grammar and syntax, is covered in detail. In addition, reading comprehension and
vocabulary building will be emphasized.
EN-073 ENGLISH ESSENTIALS WITH LAB

This course is designed for students who have English as a second language to increase their fluency in written and spoken English and to bring them
to college-level competency. It will focus on the process of writing grammatically correct essays in a variety of rhetorical modes. Language skills that emphasize grammar, reading,
speaking/listen-ing, and conversation will also be emphasized.
Attention will be given to vocabulary building and the
use of idioms.
EN-107 ETHNIC LITERATURE

This survey course introduces students to a variety of explorations into the experiences of cultural groups as
reflected in American literary styles. Students will
read and discuss literature representative of various ethnic groups. PREREQUISITE: EN-109
EN-108 AMERICAN LITERATURE
3 credits
This course is a chronological survey of representative prose and verse from
the Colonial Period to the Twentieth Century. Authors
include Cooper, Emerson, Twain, Dickinson, Poe and others.

EN-109 EXPOSITORY WRITING
3 credits
This course will develop students’ competency in preparing focused and substantiated
essays in a variety of rhetorical modes using multiple
revisions. Assigned readings will assist students in
determining author’s purpose, understanding literary terms, and analyzing the structure of the essays. Methods of research are introduced, and a documented essay is required.
EN-110 COMPOSITION AND LITERATURE
3 credits
This is a course for students who have indicated an advanced mastery of essay
writing skills (including grammatical competency), critical
thinking, and well-developed vocabulary. A variety of literary genres, including the short story, poetry and drama,
will be studied and analyzed to increase awareness of
different modes of fiction. In addition to submitting a series of essay assignments, students will be required to complete a properly-documented research paper.
PREREQUISITE: EN109 or satisfactory score on placement exam.
EN-115 MASTERWORKS OF WORLD LITERATURE
3 credits
This course introduces students to a selection of major works from Classical
to Medieval and Renaissance times that have contributed to establishing the Western literary tradition. Heroic tales, romances,
fables, myths and legends are among the types studied.
