HA-101 INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH CARE

The health industry involves a battery of practitioners, with an elaborate
network of specialized knowledge, rapidly advancing technologies, techniques, therapies, and management diverse in their organization and modes of
delivery. This course provides a general overview of the United States health care industry, its policy
makers, values and priorities. Major influences
in the continuing growth and change of the
American health care delivery system are
examined, along with the important legislative,
political and economic factors. The effects
of medical education, scientific advances, rising costs, changing population demographics, and American values
and assumptions regarding health care are
also addressed.
HA-102 HEALTH OFFICE OPERATIONS
3 credits
This course develops an understanding of management methods used in today’s medical office, proficiency in creating
medical communications, and integrates concepts
of modern technology in communications,
preparation of financial data, personnel data, and records management. The course emphasizes methods for ensuring
office management through monitoring and
coordination of all office components including
those related to administration of people,
procedures, equipment and environment, budgeting, time, and supplies, adherence to statutory regulations concerning the conduct of a medical office.
The key players in the front and back office
will be discussed. PREREQUISITE: HA-101
HA-140 INTRODUCTION TO MEDICAL CODING
3 credits
This course will provide students with an overview of the historical development of medical nomenclature and classification systems including ICD-9-CM and
CPT coding. This course concentrates on
the coding of diseases, operative procedures, and abstracting clinical diagnostic data from medical
information. PREREQUISITE: HC-125
HA-180 MEDICAL CODING AND BILLING FOR THE MEDICAL ASSISTANT
4 credits, 4 lecture hours
This comprehensive, three-part course provides the student with an overview
of the historical development of medical nomenclature and classification systems introducing the coding
of the diseases, medical conditions, and operative procedures, both in the in-patient and out-patient setting
to the highest level of specificity. In addition, the student will learn to research and apply knowledge of insurance rules and regulations for major insurance programs, office bookkeeping system, accurately post charges, payments, and adjustments to patient accounts. The student will
review all insurance payments and explanation of benefits forms and perform patient scheduling using the Medical Office Manager Software. PREREQUISITES: HC-108 and HC-110
HA-240 MEDICAL OFFICE INSURANCE AND BILLING PROCEDURES
3 credits
Accurate processing of health insurance claims and billing procedures is studied in this course. Abstract patient
records and other source documents to accurately code all diagnoses, procedures, and services using ICD-9-CM for diagnoses, and CPT codes.
Research and apply knowledge of insurance
rules and regulations for major insurance
programs. Operate the office bookkeeping system properly. Accurately post charges, pay-ments, and adjustments to patient accounts. Review all insurance payments and explanation of benefits
forms. Perform patient scheduling using
the Medical Office Manager software. PREREQUISITE:
HA-140, Must have 42 credits (Last Semester)
HA-260 MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION
3 credits
This course provides students with practical training on transcription equipment
and preparation of medical documents. Emphasis is placed upon accurate transcription and document formatting for operative reports, discharge summaries and progress notes.
PREREQUISITES: HA-101, HC-125, and BT-101
