Rangers face Inter Milan in Champions League Group H on Tuesday needing victory to make sure of becoming the first Scottish team to reach the competition's knockout stages.
After a dismal run of results in the Premier League, however, the match against the group winners could be the last in charge for manager Alex McLeish.
Chairman David Murray has given the beleaguered coach until the first week in December to turn around a wretched season, in which they slipped 17 points behind arch-rivals Celtic after throwing away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Falkirk on Saturday.
That was Rangers' ninth game in a row without a victory, the worst run in their 132-year history.
They lie second in the group standings with six points from five games, six adrift of Inter, and a draw would put them through if Artmedia Bratislava fail to beat Porto.
McLeish described strikers strikers Dado Prso and Nacho Novo as "long shots" to play as they recover from a hamstring injury and broken foot respectively.
Thomas Buffel, who had missed the last 11 games with a knee injury, added much-needed creative spark against Falkirk and McLeish believes his comeback highlighted how much Rangers have been affected by injuries to their top players.
"The introduction of Thomas brightened things up and he looked really lively," McLeish said. "It was great to have him back. When you lose your top players for a long period of time, it can affect things greatly but you see the difference he made coming into the team."
Inter, who play arch domestic rivals AC Milan next Sunday, may be tempted to rest key players but coach Roberto Mancini insists they are taking the game seriously.
"It's right to honour the match," he said after a laboured 1-0 win over Ascoli in Serie A on Saturday.
"We will go there to win and honour the group even if we are calmer because we have already qualified."
Uruguayan striker Alvaro Recoba has a slight muscle injury and is likely to miss the game in Glasgow although Mancini has Nigerian Obafemi Martins and Argentine Julio Ricardo Cruz as options to partner Brazilian Adriano.
Mancini may start players who have been on the sidelines recently including central defender Marco Materazzi and midfielder Cristiano Zanetti.
