1)電話預約
(making an appointment with a doctor/dentist)：
你問：
Hello, is this Dr. Smith\'s office?
（喂，這是史密斯醫師的診\所嗎？）
註：在美國看醫師，通常都要先以電話預約，很少能隨到隨看。
對方說：
Yes, it is. May I help you?
（是的，我能為你服務嗎？）
你問：
Do you accept new patients?
（你們接受新病人嗎？）
註：美國許多醫生，如果舊病人太多，就不收新的病人。
對方說：
Yes, we do. Would you like to make an appointment?
（是的，你要預約嗎？）
你說：
Yes, my name is C. H. Huang. Do you think I can see Dr. Smith today?
（是的，我叫黃中華。我今天可以看史醫生嗎？）
註：如有緊急病痛，要打911電話，叫救護車(ambulance)，到醫院急診\室(emergency room)就診\。
人家可能說：
Not today, all the appointments have been booked up. Could you come tomorrow afternoon at 2:30?
（to be booked up是預約滿了。）
（今天不行，所有預約都滿了。明天下午2點半，你可以來嗎？）
你說：
Well, I am afraid I can not make it at 2:30. Can you change it to 3:30?
（我怕2點半來不了，你能改為3點半嗎？）
對方也許說：
I think I can do that.
（我想可以。）
註：與醫生預約後，要準時到達，如須取消預約，也要至少在一天前通知，否則有時會被罰款。
你可能想問：
Would you please tell me how much will it cost for an office visit?
（請你告訴我到診\所看一次要多少錢。）
對方也許說：
It depends. The office visit is 65 dollars plus any extra treatment you might need.
（那要看情形而定。診\所看一次是65元，你也許需要加上其他額外的治療費用。）
註：第一次看醫生比較貴。找專科醫生（specialist）比找普通科（general practice，簡稱G.P.）更貴。
你說：
Okay, I will be there at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon. See you then.
（好吧！我明天下午3點半到你那兒。到時再見！）
（2）在醫生診\所
（at doctor\'s office）：
（但一般機關的醫務室叫infirmary或health clinic）
醫師問：
What seems to be your trouble, Mr. Huang？?
（黃先生，你有什麼不舒服？）
你也許說：
I have not been feeling well in the last few days. I had a temperature and coughed a lot last night. I also have a little bit of a sore throat.
（這幾天我一直感到不舒服。昨晚我發燒和咳嗽，我也有點喉嚨痛。）
或：I have a headache today.
（我今天頭痛。）
或：I am running a high temperature.
（我發高燒。）
或：When I coughed I had lots of mucus.
（我咳嗽，就有許多濃痰。）
或：I can not sleep very soundly; I wake up very early each morning.
（我不能熟睡，醒得很早。）
或：I have a stuffy nose, (runny nose, sinus problems, an earache, backache, stomachache, chest pain, a fever, hay fever.)
（我有鼻塞、流鼻水、鼻竇炎、耳朵痛、背痛、胃痛、胸部痛、發燒、敏感症。）
（stuffy nose也叫nasal congestion）
或：I am having allergy problems. My eyes and my ears itch.
（我有敏感毛病；我的眼睛、耳朵都癢。）
I kept sneezing when I got up this morning.
（今早起床，一直打噴嚏。）
或：I throw up whatever I eat.
（我吃什麼都吐。）（throw up = vomit）
I feel tired, drowsy and dizzy. Sometimes I have the chills.
（我覺得疲倦，昏昏欲睡，頭暈，有時怕冷。）
或：While climbing, bending or stooping, my knees hurt.
（當我爬高、彎身、彎腰，膝蓋會痛。）
I strained my back by lifting heavy boxes.
（我提重的箱子，扭傷了背。）
I twisted my ankle. I fell from a tree and hurt my leg.
（我從樹上跌下，扭到腳踝。）
或：I was wheezing last night and had a hard time breathing. It seems as if I have asthma.
（昨晚我有點喘而且呼吸困難，我似乎有氣喘。）
或：My backside has been itching badly. Could it be a sign of hemorrhoids?
（我的肛門癢得很厲害，這是痔瘡的症狀嗎？）
（backside = rear end）
或：I feel constipated. I am having some stomach problems lately. My bowel movement is not regular, either.
（我覺得有便秘；近來我有些胃病，大便也不正常。）
或：I have diarrhea. I have to use the bathroom several times a day.
（我拉肚子，每天要上廁所好幾次。）
醫生問：How is your appetite , Mr. Huang? Are you eating well?
（黃先生，你的食慾怎樣？能吃得好嗎？）
你說：No , I have no appetite.
（食慾不好，沒有胃口。）
醫生說：Roll up your sleeve, please. I want to check your blood pressure first. Do you have a lot of mucus in your saliva when you cough?
（把你的袖子捲上，我先量量你的血壓。你咳嗽時有很多濃痰嗎？）
mucus in saliva（通常指黃色的濃痰）
你說：No , it seems to be a dry cough.
（沒有，好像是乾咳。）
（百日咳叫 whooping cough）
醫生說：Your blood pressure is normal. Open your mouth and say "ah".
（你的血壓正常。張開嘴，說聲「啊」！）
你問：Anything wrong, doctor ? Do I have respiratory problem?
（醫生，有什麼毛病嗎？我有呼吸器官的毛病嗎？）
醫生也許說：You have some tonsil inflammation. I will give you some tablets to stop the swelling.
（你有點扁桃腺發炎，我給你一些藥片，阻止它腫大。）
你問：I get tired very easily. Do I need a liver function test?
（我很容易疲倦，我需要做肝功能檢查嗎？）
或：My heart beat is very fast. Do I need an EKG?
（我心臟跳得很快，我需要做心電圖檢查嗎？）
或：Do I have to come back to see you again , Doc ?
（醫生，我還要來看你嗎？）（doc = doctor）
醫生也許說：
No, it\'s not necessary unless you feel sick again.
（不需要，除非你又生病了。）
或：You may need an annual check-up.
（你可能需要一年一度的體檢。）（physical exam = check-up）
你也許有其他的問題，諸如：
What diet should I follow to improve my health?
（我該吃什麼食物，才能有助健康？）
或：Will that be a major or a minor problem ? Do I need a stool or urine test?
（這是大毛病還是小毛病？我要做大、小便檢查嗎？）
或：Can this disease be cured ?
（這個病能根治嗎？）
或：How long will it take to make a full recovery ?
（多久才能全部復元？）
或：What should I do to prevent my problem from getting worse ?
（我怎樣才能防止毛病惡化？）
或：May I have your assessment on my health , Doc?
（醫生，你能評價我的健康情形嗎？）
或：Will this medication have any side-effects or is it addictive ?
（這種藥有副作用或有習慣性嗎？）
或：Do you mind if I ask for a second opinion about my surgery?
（關於我的手術，你介不介意我再問其他醫生的意見？）
最後你也許問：
Do I have to follow any special diet?
（我要吃特別指定的食物嗎？）
醫生可能說：No, I will recommend that you drink plenty of fluids such as orange juice and plain water. Also, get lots of rest.
（不需要，我建議你喝大量的流質食物，像橘子汁和白開水，也要充分的休息。）
你說：Okay, I will. Where do I pay you?
（好，我會的。我在哪裡付錢？）
註：美國醫生診\所，都不賣藥。看完病後，如有藥方，要到drug store購買，藥劑師（pharmacist）把藥配好後，都在藥瓶上註明藥名和用法。
醫生說：You may pay the lady at the receptionist desk.
（你在接待員的櫃台上付錢。）
（receptionist接待員，負責接電話、安排約會等。）
你問：Excuse me, Ma\'am, do you think my school insurance will cover this expense？
（請問女士，你想我的學校保險可以用在這種費用嗎？）
（在美如無醫藥保險（health insurance），一旦生病，醫療費用，十分昂貴，往往使人難以承擔。）
對方也許說：I don\'t think so. It only covers hospitalization.
（我想不行。那只能用於住院。）
（美國醫藥保險包括看醫生、住院、買藥等等，保險項目愈多，保險費也愈貴。）
你問：How much will it be？
（多少錢呢？）
對方說：Sixty dollars.（60元）
註：美國除一些傷風、感冒及外用成藥可以不需醫生開處方外，其他購藥，都要醫生處方。
假如你不想再來，可叮囑說：
You don\'t have to make an appointment for me. I\'ll call your office when I need to see Dr. Smith again.
（你不必為我約定時間，假如我需要看史醫師，我會再打電話給你。）
（3）在牙醫診\所（at a dentist office）：
你說：
I am sorry, doctor, I am a little late for my appointment.
（抱歉，醫師，我遲到了一點。）
對方也許說：
That\'s all right. Sit down, Mr. Huang. What is bothering you?
（沒關係，黃先生，坐下，你有什麼毛病？）
你說：
I have a tooth-ache. I really could not sleep last night; it bothered me a lot.
（我牙痛。昨晚痛得很厲害，無法睡覺。）
或：
I have gums problem. My glands are swollen.
（我有牙床毛病；牙肉腫了。）
或：
I would like to have my teeth cleaned.
（我要清牙。）
（註：一般牙醫都要病人每半年清牙一次；每次約八、九十元，清牙師叫dental hygienist）
牙醫也許說：
Let me look at it. Open your mouth wide, please. A little wider. Where is the pain?
（讓我看看。請把口張開，再張開一點。哪痛？）
你說：
The pain seems to be in this tooth.
（好像是這顆牙痛。）
牙醫也許問：
Does the tooth itself become sore when touched? Is it sensitive when you brush your teeth?
（碰到牙齒會酸痛嗎？刷牙時會敏感嗎？）
你說：
Yes, whenever I brush that tooth, it gets sore. It also bleeds quite often.
（會的。每當刷到那顆牙，就會酸痛，也常出血。）
牙醫說：
Let me take an X-ray of your teeth to see if you have any decayed areas or cavities?
（讓我照個 X 光，看看你的牙齒有沒有蛀爛的地方或牙洞。）
你也許說：
I might have some cavities because I have eaten a lot of sweets.
（我也許有蛀牙，因為我吃了許多甜食。）
牙醫說：
You are right. Look at this X-ray film. You do have some cavities. Your gums are not in the best conditions. You need some fillings, too.
（你說得對，看這張 X 光片，你有些蛀牙。你的齒齦不是很好，你也需要補些牙洞。）
你問：
How much do you charge for fillings?
（補牙洞要多少錢？）
牙醫說：
Seventy dollars for each filling.
（每補一個洞70元。）
你也許問：
Do you think I can wait until I return to Taiwan two months later? I can go to my university hospital where I don\'t have to pay anything.
（你想我能等到兩個月後回到台灣再補嗎？我可以到我的大學醫院不必花錢。）
牙醫也許說：
I think you could, as long as you keep brushing your teeth properly every day and use a water pik or dental floss.
（我想可以。只要你每天好好刷牙，並用水沖器或牙線。）
你可能問：
What is a water pik?
（什麼是水沖器？）
牙醫說：
It is a dental aid for oral hygiene. If you use it, it will help you flush out food particles and debris between teeth and gum areas where the toothbrush can not reach.
（那是一種幫助口腔衛生的機器，它可以幫你把牙齒與牙床間的食物殘渣沖掉，那是牙刷刷不到的。）
（water pik是一種電動用水沖激牙縫裡食物殘渣的機器；oral hygiene是口腔衛生。）
你問：
Is that expensive? Where can I get it?
（那很貴嗎？在那裡可以買到？）
牙醫說：
It costs approximately 40-50 dollars. You can buy it at any drug store.
（大約要花四、五十元錢，任何藥房都能買到。）
你說：
I think I will buy it later.
（我想以後要買。）
牙醫說：
Here is some toothpaste especially for sensitive teeth. I am also giving you a bottle of mouth wash to help your gums.
（這是一些特別適合牙齒敏感使用的牙膏。我也給你一瓶有助齒齦的漱口水。）
（mouth wash是漱口用的一種藥水，可去口臭和殺菌。）
你說：
Thanks a lot. Good-bye!
（多謝，再會！）
