Some young motorists show "an alarming disregard" for their own and others' safety when driving at night, an AA Motoring Trust report reveals.
Interviews with young drivers showed many liked testing themselves and their cars to the limit, often on unlit roads.
Some regularly indulged in drinking and driving, while some regarded having a road accident "as a rite of passage"
Others thought it was actually safer to speed at night as "you'd be able to see the lights of oncoming traffic".
The report also showed that male drivers aged 17-20 were seven times more at risk from accidents that all male drivers.
Between the hours of 2am and 5am, the risk was 17 times higher - with about 225 of 17-20 year old male drivers being killed or seriously injured annually.
Males aged 21-25 had twice as much at risk compared with all male drivers, but this increased to three times at risk between 2am and 5am.
AA Motoring Trust road safety head Andrew Howard said: "Inexperienced driving, a cavalier attitude to life, a night-time social life involving alcohol, and driving too fast, are combining to kill and maim young people and other road users every night of the week."
He went on: "While most young drivers have the skills to drive safely, this study identifies a dangerous minority of thrill-seeking young male drivers. In the short term, urgent action, with targeted police enforcement, is required to identify them and get them off the road.
"The study also highlights why improving young men's attitude to driving is as important as improving their ability to drive, and the Government should look again at how this can be achieved."
