Some 52,000 people have applied for 750 jobs in the European commission's latest recruitment drive, the EU executive said yesterday. Successful applicants will get a job for life, but first they must face a long selection process next year during which they will be tested on European law, politics and language skills.
EU bureaucrats pay a special low tax rate and are offered a range of benefits including diplomatic car licence plates, and subsidised healthcare and schooling. The highest number of applications came from Italy with more than 9,000 would-be officials, followed by France.
