There are few places on earth where nature can be seen in almost primitive(原始的)condition. One is the Galapagos Islands, where, largely unspoiled by man, strange and unusual birds, animals and plants settle and growmany of which are found nowhere else in the world. These islands lay directly on the Equator, about 1, 000 kilometers west of the South American mainland.

But the Galapagos is now facing a crisis(危机). Its human inhabitants, who live on the island of Santa Cruz, want to develop the business and tourist possibility of the islands. Recently, they have been having a bitter struggle with the naturalists who work at the Charles Darwin Research Center, alto on Santa Cruz. The naturalists want to keep the island’s wildlife alive, which is already suffering as a result of human activities.

The animals greatest danger used to be sailors who, hundreds of years ago, plundered(掠夺)the islands for food. They wiped out about 250, 000 Giant Tortoises, causing extinction(毁灭)of several species which lived on some of the smaller islands. The last survivor, an 80-yearold Giant Tortoise called Lonely George, lives under the protection of naturalists at the Darwin Center.

       56. The best topic for this passage is ________.

  A. In Primitive Times

       B. Giant Tortoises’ Extinction

  C. Great Danger to the Galapagos

       D. Development of the Island

       57. Which of the following maps shows rightly the position of the Galapagos Islands?

注:①□stands for the South American mainland.

    ②☆stands for the Galapagos Islands.

    ③—stands for the Equator.

      58. It can be inferred from the second paragraph that if the business and tourism are developed in the Islands, ________.

         A. there will be a war between the inhabitants and naturalists

         B. a great number of wild animals and plants will die out

         C. a lot of people will come to the Galapagos for food

         D. the inhabitants on the Islands will be well off

                                                                  B

Learning disabilities are very common. They affect perhaps 10 percent of all children. Four times as many as girls have learning disabilities.

Since about 1970, new research has helped brain scientists understand these problems better. Scientists now know there are many different kinds of learning disabilities and that they are caused by many different things. There is no longer any question that all learning disabilities result from differences in the way the brain is organized.

You cannot look at a child and tell if he or she has a learning disability. There is no outward sign of the disorder. So some researchers began looking at the brain itself to learn what might be wrong.

In one study, researchers examined the brain of the learning-disabled person who had died in an accident. They found two unusual things. One has something to do with cells in the left side of the brain, which control language. These cells normally are white. In the learning-disabled person, however, these cells were gray. The researchers also found that many of the nerve cells were not in a line the way they should have been. The nerve cells were mixed together.
