在高中英语和历届高考中，very 这个词出现频率较高，它是最常用的词汇之一。它作副词用时，意思是“很，甚，极其，非常”等，在句中可修饰形容词、副词、不定代词、序数词、分词和介词短语等。very作形容词修饰名词时，意思是“真的、真正的、就是”等。但要正确使用very须注意以下几点：

　　1． very修饰形容词时,该形容词必须是原形，若是比较级，则用much。如：
The stars look very small only because they are much farther away from us. 星星看上去很小，仅仅是因为它们离我们很远。
　　That is a very interesting story , but this story is much more interesting than that one. 那是一个很有趣的故事，但是这个故事比那个有趣得多。

　　2． very修饰过去分词时，一般该分词已完全形容词化。若仍带有很强的动作意味，则
不用very ，而用much或其他副词修饰。如：
　　Often they get very excited when “their” player or team wins. 当“他们的”先手或（比赛）队赢了时，他们很兴奋。
　　The flight was much delayed by bad weather. 由于天气不好，飞行延期。

　　3．与形容词、副词最高级或own，same，next，first，last等词连用，以加强语气，表示“最大程度地”，“完全 ，充分”。
　　the very same word 一模一样的字眼 ； the very first to arrive 最早到达者
　　That is the very last thing I expected . 这完全出呼我预料之外。
　　You can keep this dictionary for your very own. 这本词典你完全可以保留着归自己所有。
　　Bring out your very best wine. ____Mike is coming to dinner. 拿出你最好的酒来——迈克要来吃饭。
　　注：much也可以修饰形容词、副词最高级，与very同意。但是，much位于the之前， very位于the之后。
　　He is the very youngest in our class.
　　He is much the youngest in our class.
　　他是我们班年纪最小的。

　　4．与the，this或my，your等连用，可起到加强语气的作用，表示“正是这个，恰好，极其，甚至于”等意思。
　　Do me the favor to put on this shirt , and this suit ; it’s just the thing , the very thing . 请帮我穿上衬衣和衣服，就是这样，很正确。

　　You are the very man I am looking for . 你正是我要寻找的人。
　　It is my very bike I lost last year . 这正是我去年丢失的自行车。
　　注：very作上述意思解时，语意与just相同。但just是副词，要置于冠词前，而very置于冠词或代词之后。如：
This is just the book I want . This is the very book I want . 这正是我所要的书。

　　5．very的连用亦可以起到加强语气的作用。如：
　　Very, very big , or very, very many doesn’t mean “infinite” . 非常大或非常多并不意味着“无穷” 。

　　6． very可表示不带most的意义。如：
　　That’s very (most) kind of you . 你心肠真好。

　　7．not very 表示语气的委婉 ，一般译为“不很，不大”。如：
　　To finish the work in time is not very probable. 按时完成这项工作是不大可能的。
　　It is not very warm today. 今天不很热。

　　8．very fine，very good，very well 用在口语中语气不同。
　　very fine “好极了，好啊”（常用作反语）； very good “很好”（较客气的用语，表示同意、赞许）； very well “好吧”（常带点勉强的口吻）。
　　It is very fine. 真是好极了。
　　Very well , if you insist. 如果你坚持的话，就这样吧。

　　9．very和very much 都可以表示“很，非常”，但very不能修饰动词。修饰动词时，须用very much 。如：
　　① She said she missed us very. （误）
　　　 She said she missed us very much.. （正）
　　　她说她非常想我们。
　　② My mother very loves me . （误）
　　　 My mother loves me very much. （正）
　　　 我妈妈很爱我。

　　10．very 不能修饰某些表语形容词，而要用其他词来修饰。如：
　　quite sure 十分有把握 ； quite right 完全正确,
　　I’m wide awake. 我十分清醒。
　　She is sound / fast asleep. 她睡得很香 / 很沉。

　　11．在定语从句中，very修饰指物的先行词时，定语从句的关系代词用that，而不用which。如：
　　This is the very dictionary that is great help. 这是那本很有用的词典。
